    changing channel setup time

What are the issues relating to channel setup time. Does it depend on the bandwidth of the access or is it only related with video decoder setup (reset and refill of buffers...etc)?

Not sure what you mean by channel setup time - you mean 'zapping' time - the time to change from one broadcast channel to another?

It depends on the STB, the way the content is encoded (how often frames are inserted etc.)  and network quality.

A good CA system will only add a few tens of milliseconds.

    Re: changing channel setup time

How is each channel distributed uniquely in IPTV? Similarly, how is each channel identified and separate by a STB in the case of IPTV channel broadcast?

    Re: changing channel setup time

Why channel broadcast? It should be more like channel on demand, but probably in that case the zapping time is more relevant. But considering a phisical access channel like ADSL2+ it has to be channel on demand because with ~~20Mbps forget Channel broadcast (for the usual number of channels)...

So considering this you have a client-server communication and that question of channel identification is not applicable.

    Re: changing channel setup time

    Hi ,

Broadcast channels are multicast over the network ,which saves lots of bandwidth . The client STB wishing to view a particular channel can join the channel multicast group and the channel can be viewed. Each channel is recognised with a particular multicast ip and port , so that answers ur question of channel identification also ...

Let me lknow if i have answered your question .

currently, the igmp protocol is used to join/unjoin ip multicast groups. When viewing broadcast digital TV, hit the channel changer on your remote results in an igmp packet from your set top box out towards the adsl/cable router or the local BRAS.
